indian railways PNR statusThis article displays information on checking Indian Railways PNR status online. We'll discuss 3 ways - online, via SMS and via phone call.

If you're planning for trip on Indian Railways and want to check Indian Railways PNR status of your tickets online, this is the right place to do so.

Checking Indian Railways PNR status online

Although there are number of websites available to check Indian Railways PNR status, I would recommend the official website of Indian Railways to do so.

So, just visit http://www.indianrail.gov.in/pnr_Enq.html and you'll see page like this:

Now, enter your 10 digit PNR no., which you will find it on the top left corner of the ticket.

The sample ticket is displayed below to help you find PNR no.

Enter the security code given on screen and click on "Get Status" button.

That's it.

It'll display your Indian Railways PNR status on screen.

Once you get PNR status, then you have to know whether the ticket is confirmed or not.

Confirmed Booking (CNF), Waiting List (WL), and REGRET - If your PNR status enquiry shows CNF, it means that your ticket is confirmed and your coach and berth number will be visible.

Getting a WL after running a PNR status check means that you are in the waiting list and if other passengers cancel their tickets you stand a chance of getting a confirmed or RAC booking. REGRET means that no more bookings are permitted.

There are different types of PNR status codes that you will get.

Some important points to remember:

The online PNR and seat availability queries are fetched from the computerized reservation applications. These online reservation applications are shut down daily around 2330 hrs to 0030 hrs IST.

Due to the dynamic changes taking place in the PNR status updation and the availability positions, these two types of queries have to be fetched from the online reservation applications, hence the non- availability of them after certain timings. The sheer size of these databases does not allow them to be copied over network lines. Please note that the web site is functional 24 hrs. a day and other queries (trains between any two stations, fare queries, etc.) are functional throughout the day.

For the PNR and seat availability queries, the result is fetched from the computerized reservation applications at the five sites, viz. New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Secunderabad. If there is any network link failure, or if the network lines are very congested, then this error message is displayed. It might so happen, that you are getting seat availability and PNR information for say trains originating from New Delhi and Kolkata, but not for trains originating from Mumbai.
