Smoking disturbs sleep

One of the negative consequences of smoking is a bad dream because at night the body does not receive a subsequent dose of nicotine, there is a withdrawal syndrome. This is claimed by scientists from the University of Hopkins. They examined 40 smokers who smoked 20 cigarettes a day.

At home, smokers were attached to an encephalograph for the night, which registered the electrical activity of the brain during sleep. And for comparison, the same procedure was carried out with 40 non-smokers. Participants were also asked whether they slept quietly at night and whether they felt tired throughout the day. Restless sleep is more characteristic of smokers than non-smokers: 22.5% of smokers reported having a restless night compared to 5% of non-smokers. This was confirmed by an encephalograph who showed different patterns of brain function.


Ling Chan, MD, suggests that this is caused by nicotine. Team Chan explains this as follows: nicotine is a stimulant, so it can be difficult to fall asleep. But, when the body stops its action, there are symptoms of withdrawal syndrome, which ultimately leads to restless and anxious sleep.
